Exemplary Mother Award

About Exemplary Mother Award

The Exemplary Mother Award (EMA) started in 1993 with the Wee Kim Wee Shield which was presented to Jamiyah by the late President, Dr Wee Kim Wee. EMA is applicable to all mothers regardless of their race, religions or family background.

The Presidential Shield is presented to honour mothers who persevered through hardship and sacrifices in raising their children. They toiled throughout the early years of their life to provide a better future for their children and raise them with good education and moral values. The Wee Kim Wee Shield completed all 12 rounds in 2004.

In May 2005, the late President SR Nathan, presented the second shield that lasted for the next 12 years. President Nathan also added a new judging criteria – a nominee must have contributed to the community. The second shield completed its round in 2016. In 2017, the former President Dr Tony Tan Keng Yam presented a new shield. In 2018, we introduced the Exemplary Young Mother Award (EYMA) for mothers below the age of 40.

To date, 26 mothers, comprising of Malay, Indian and Chinese mothers, and 1 Young mother, have been awarded the Exemplary Mother Award and Exemplary Young Mother Award respectively.
