Food Ration

Food Ration Assistance is given in the form of provisions such as rice, sugar, milk, cooking oil and other staples to the poor and needy. The recipients are normally orphans, widows, the aged, destitutes and families of drug addicts.

Objectives

To provide assistance in the form of monthly ration of basic necessities to the poor and needy (orphans, widows, the aged, destitutes, and families of drug addicts).

History

The food ration was introduced in 1974. To date,1500 needy family members are registered recipients of the Jamiyah Welfare Association scheme. The Prison Department, Housing Development Board and the Ministry of Community Development refer some of the cases to Jamiyah. Most of the foodstuffs are purchased by Jamiyah with part of it contributed by donors.

Services

Provisional basic essentials are provided like rice, sugar, tea or coffee, milk, cooking oil.We also provide guidance and counselling every time they come to receive their ration to ensure that the recipients are deserving individuals with special circumstances.

Eligibility criteria
1.
Poor and needy families
  a) Earning less than $750 per month and having 3 or more children to look after.
  b) Either husband/wife or both suffering from long term illness.
2. Widows/Divorcees
  a) Earning less than $750 per month and having 3 children or more to look after.
  b) By reason of child-care unable to work and have no one to depend on.
3. Family of drug detainees
  a) Husband in DRC and having 3 or more children to look after.
  b) Both husband and wife in DRC where close relatives have to look after their children.
