Donation Cheque Presentation For Disaster Relief And Rehabilitation In Indonesia, Philippines, Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos |
In a ceremony held on Thursday, 15th October 2009 at Jamiyah Singapore, the Singapore Buddhist Lodge, Amitabha Buddhist Society Singapore, Taoist Federation Singapore, Loyang Tua Pek Kong Temple, Hindu Endowments Board, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Wat Ananda Metyarama Buddhist Temple and Jamiyah Singapore, empathizing with the plight of the victims of the recent natural disasters i.e. of earthquake, storm and landfalls in recent months in Indonesia, Philippines, Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos, collaborated to raise funds to help the affected communities. Ambassadors or their representatives from each of the above mentioned countries’ embassies in Singapore were handed with donation cheques for the total amount of $200,000 collectively contributed by the organizations to support the relief and rehabilitation work in the respective countries. On plans for the future, His Excellency, Bapak Wardana, Indonesian Ambassador to Singapore, shared with ‘Voice of Islam’, Indonesia’s appreciation of the assistance lent. He reiterated that the Indonesian community is currently working with the local authorities to identify areas directly affected by the disaster so that the funds can be channelled directly to the affected areas. In his speech at the ceremony, Haji Abu Bakar Maidin, President, Jamiyah Singapore and Co-Chairman of Disaster relief and assistance committee, expressed his sincere thanks to everyone who had contributed to the worthy cause which he said is an expression of our empathy and solidarity with the people of the affected countries. He also offered the hope that the lives of the displaced and those affected would return to its normalcy. Haji Abu Bakar then invited the gathering to observe a two minutes of silence, in prayer for those who perished during the disaster and to show our sympathy to the families of the victims and wishing the injured an early recovery.
