TOUCH OF HARMONY PROGRAMME 2009 (26TH MAY 2009 – 10TH JUNE 2009) (A Joint Project of Jamiyah Singapore and The New York University, USA) |
Jamiyah Singapore hosted the Touch of Harmony Programme 2009 which is in its 5th year running. The idea for this joint project was proposed in 2004, in the discussion between H.E. Eduardo Ramos Gomez, the former Mexican Ambassador to Singapore and President, Jamiyah Singapore, Haji Abu Bakar Maidin. The implementation and objective of this initiative would not have been achieved without the support from the esteemed Lee Foundation In this experiential programme, a team of students and faculty members from the New York University and various Universities in Singapore are given the opportunity to visit each other’s homeland to observe, work together and actively partake in educational, developmental and welfare missions and activities so as to learn about different socio-cultural and ethnic backgrounds. This year, Jamiyah Singapore received an eight-member team from New York University who worked together with Jamiyah and other institutions in Singapore as means to promote multi-faith, multi-racial, multi-cultural, inter-religious and inter-ethnic goodwill and understanding. Mr Mohd Hosni Abdul Malik, Director, Fund Development, Public Relations and Marketing, Jamiyah Singapore, aptly describes the programme as a “Wonderful, enriching, spiritual Journey” in his speech at the Closing ceremony of the programme on 10th June 2009 while Ms Valerie Cabral, Assistant Director, HEOP, New York University, stated that “What started as a community service programme, has turned into a family”. ‘Touch of Harmony 2009’ gave the students the opportunity of living their passions in areas such as Community Service where they were able to contribute by serving the needy and disadvantaged in Jamiyah’s Welfare Homes and Singapore Buddhist Lodge. They partake in programmes at Jamiyah Business School, Global Child Development Centre and Apsara Arts International. |
