Talk on Global Economic Recession : Challenges And Opportunities |
| Jamiyah Singapore hosted Dr Ahmad Mohamed Ali, President of Islamic Development Bank (IDB), Jeddah at the Al Malik Faisal Hall, Jamiyah Singapore on 7th May 2009. He spoke on the Challenges and Opportunities present in the current Global Economic Recession. Amongst the distinguished guests present were His Excellency Ahmed Abdulaziz Al Adwani, Ambassador of Kuwait, Mr Zainul Abideen Rasheed, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Prof Abdulghaffar S Bazuhair of the Saudi Arabian Cultural Office, Mr Noor-e-Helal Saifur Rahman of Bangladesh High Commission, Mr Zainudin B Abdul Shukor and Mdm Juraida bte Abd Jamil of the Malaysian High Commission and Mr Kemal Haripurwanto of the Indonesian Embassy as well as many company Chief Executives as well as religious and community leaders. President, Haji Abu Bakar Maidin, delivered the opening address where he thanked Dr Ahmad for expending time to be at Jamiyah. Haji Abu Bakar touched on how the IDB had assisted many Muslim organizations and Madrasahs and how many students here have benefited from their generosity. Dr Ahmad then spoke on the issue of the Financial and Economic Crisis and how we should learn and benefit from this crisis. Even the United Kingdom and France, which formerly had resisted Islamic Banking, are showing a growing interest in the system. Dr Ahmad shared his personal insights of the Islamic Banking’s response to the current economic system and announced that it is “not all doom and gloom”. Turning this crisis into opportunities was the advice given by Dr Ahmad who stated that we should take this opportunity to contribute to the world economic order. The programme then continued with a prolific Question and Answer session on topics ranging from Debt morality and ethics to Singapore’s role in the Islamic Banking system |
