CHARITY CARNIVAL & CELEBRATING 15TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE JAMIYAH CHILDREN’S HOME ( DARUL MA’WA)

Since 1993, Jamiyah Children’s Home (Darul Ma’wa) which was back then situated at Bartley Road has been developing orphans and neglected children of single parents, drug detainees, abused children and children from dysfunctional families and children with special needs to blossom into responsible adults.

As Jamiyah Singapore celebrated its 75 th Anniversary last year (2007), this year’s Charity Carnival marks the 15 th Anniversary of the Home. This is one of the flagship projects of Jamiyah .Within the short years,the Home has developed the residents and strives to re-integrate them back to their families and society. Many are now in post secondary education, tertiary institute (NUS, Polytechnics) and they are, in one way or another, contributing back to the Home and society.

In 1999, due to the MRT Centre Line project, the Home was relocated to the present premise which was previously the Still Road Polyclinic. The Charity Carnival was hoped to be able to raise substantial fund to renovate and upgrade the present Home.

At the Official Opening Ceremony of the Charity Carnival, officiated by Mrs Yu-Foo Yee Shoon, Minister of State for Ministry Community Development, Youth & Sports, a special tribute was dedicated to President of Jamiyah Singapore, Hj. Abu Bakar Maidin by the alumni of the Home entitled ’15 Years and More…’.

“We and the Home stood humbly strong on our 15 th Anniversary due to the contributions and support you have provided and because of you, Darul Ma’wa remains as the House of Bliss shining rays of hope to all residents once including myself,” said Azhar Shaharudin, an alumni of Darul Ma’wa who is currently a 4 th year Mechanical Engineering undergraduate at National University of Singapore, in his speech.

An estimated $150,000 was successfully raised during the Charity Carnival which was held on 6 th July 2008. This annual event was sponsored by various organizations such as Singapore Buddhist Lodge, Hougang Community Centre, Sanden International (S) Pte Ltd, Kwang Im Hood Temple, Singapore Island Country Club, Mercure Roxy Singapore, J’s Wok & Grill Restaurant, NTUC Fairprice Foundation Ltd , Jamiyah Business School and many others.

Around 60 stalls were patronized their offered games, variety of food from peranakan cuisine to durian cheesecake, free health screening by SATA, jumble sale, and more. Local and foreign artistes were also invited to entertain the crowd such as DJ KC, DJ Fiza-O, Aisah Salim, Sheila Abdul, Revalina, Didi Cazli, Side Project, Suhaimi Roa, Rashid Noor, Ahli Fiqir, Dayang Nor Faizah & Asian Idol, Hady Mirza.
